Bordoodle Lifespan
The further we delve into the lifespan of our dogs, the more pleased we are. Bordoodles are considered by many to be one of the healthiest and longest living breed of “doodles”. We love our dogs so much, it’s reasonable for us all to want to spend the maximum amount of time with them while they’re here on this earth with us.
Scientific Understanding
The life expectancy of a bordoodle hasn’ t been studied extensively. For this reason, our best tool at calculating the average lifespan of the bordoodle would be to average the lifespan of the two parent breeds. As we look at the average lifespan of a standard poodle, we see that it is 12-15 years, whereas the average lifespan of the border collie is 14-17 years. Estimates derived from the two average lifespans allow us to expect the average lifespan of a Bordoodle to fall around 13-16 years.
However, these are just estimates. The life expectancy of any dog can be affected by energy levels, appetite, medical conditions along with any other outside influence.
How Long Do Mixed Breed Dogs Live?
Recent studies have shown that an individual purebred dog’s weight can be used to determine how long they can be expected to live. Veterinarian records have shown that dogs over 90lbs lived only 8 years on average, whereas dogs under 20lbs had an average lifespan of 11 years. As a general rule, small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs on average.
Our bordoodles vary in size depending on the poodle parent selected for a breeding. While weight can be an important factor in determining life expectancy, it's also important to note that these are all averages, many dogs have been shown to live shorter or longer lives than the average lifespan of any breed.
As it pertains to mixed breed dogs specifically, it has been found that regardless of size, mixed breed dogs live longer than purebred dogs. Mixed breeds living to be 14.45 years on average as compared to 14.14 years for purebred dogs. While the difference isn't tremendous, the added time spent with man’s best friend is something to cherish.
Understanding “Dog Years”
The idea that one dog year is equivalent to seven human years has long been debunked. Understanding where your dog is at in his or her lifespan can give you a good indication of what stage of life they’re in. The health and activity level will be very different for a puppy vs a dog who’s graduated into adulthood, or even that of an elderly dog. New research shows that we can convert dog years to human years using recent aging concepts. A new formula was developed based on how a dog’s DNA changes over time. (human-age=16ln(dog’s-age)+31)
Following this methodology is more accurate than the previous “one dog year equals seven human years” because it predicts the age of the dog in a way that shows small dogs live longer than large dogs. We can all recognize that an 8 year old Great Dane may appear senile, where as an 8 year old toy poodle will be spry, in the prime of his life. Size plays a significant role in how quickly a dog will age over time.
As the formula above is quite complex, we’ve broken it down into size categories. For a quick and easy way to calculate your Bordoodles age, you can review our chart below, or even print it out, saving it for future reference!
